Disrupt the Culture is a four part series aimed to change the campus culture in a healthy and holistic way. Substance use in college has become a ritual that students often see as an integral part of their higher education experience. Many students come to college with established habits, and the college environment can exacerbate the problem.
1 in 4 college students report academic consequences from substance use, including missing class, falling behind in class, doing poorly on exam or papers, and receiving lower grades overall.
Factors related to college environments are significant indicators of high risk behavior. Students attending schools with strong Greek systems and with prominent athletic programs tend to use substances more than students at other schools. The William Magee Center hopes to provide context around campus social norms, storytelling, and development of systemic plans to help our campus community change the landscape of substance use on our campus.
Disrupt the Culture’s four part series includes:
- Speaker Series: focuses on providing content and context to our greater campus community, while also providing relevant storytelling to help move the needle and reduce substance use on our campus and beyond.
- Hot Topic: focuses on providing timely information regarding events and trends seen within our community.
- Listening Series: provides an open, safe space; giving our students the platform to discuss their campus concerns around substance use; while allowing our staff to listen and acknowledge their concerns. The goal is to analyze and and provide appropriate, evidence based, and tailored education and prevention services to our community.
- Workshop: allows registered student organizations to take a deep dive into their organization to explore and analyze their culture regarding substance use. It is a tool to discuss campus culture and campus climate regarding substances and how to become a positive voice by making intentional, systemic changes within each organization to disrupt the current culture of substance use in our community.
